Welcome to the Grosse Pointe Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies Member Resource page. This is where visitors and members can learn about our resources, activities and events. Founded in 2017, the aim of the Center is to advance the arts and humanities through deepening our understanding of a unique era that has helped to shape our current civilization. As our organization develops, we hope to become a prime source of information and learning opportunities that will connect you with others who are also interested in exploring the many pathways of history and the arts and letters.
Last year, I referenced Stephanie Story's website. Stephanie is the author of “Oil and Marble: A Novel of Leonardo and Michelangelo.” On her site, she lists her top ten museums in the United States featuring Italian Renaissance Art. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting most of her picks over the years and I’m delighted to mention that we held GPCMRS member programs at three of these amazing institutions in 2017. The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and The National Gallery in Washington D.C. were all GPCMRS destinations. (The Washington excursion included an evening at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre).
In 2017 we also visited the British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Wallace Collection in London as well as the The Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge.
In 2018 we toured the MET, the JP Morgan Library and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Thus far in 2019, we have undertaken two amazing tours that included visits to some amazing museums in Cologne, Nuremberg, Dusseldorf, Bonn, Berlin, Prague, Florence, Venice and Verona.
The 2020 GPCMRS Schedule of Events is currently under development and will be announced soon.
In the meantime, please note that the 54rd International Congress on Medieval Studies program sponsored by the Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University will be announced soon. The Congress will be held in May 2020. This is one of the most extensive and respected gatherings of its kind for anyone interested in Medieval scholarship and several GPCMRS members will be attending. (For more information visit: wmich.edu/medieval).
Over time, our goal is to build a schedule of extraordinary programs and excursions that will provide outstanding learning opportunities locally, nationally and internationally. What better way to explore these incredible institutions and locations than with other GPCMRS members.
For more information on these excursions, please go to our upcoming schedule page. Once you’ve registered as an Associate Member we’ll provide you with the details on the various programs for your consideration.
